Pärnu was founded in 1251, when first church was built on the banks of river Pärnu (formerly known as river Embecke). During its long history Pärnu has grown to be honorable Hansa and resort city.
Today Pärnu is mainly know as a summer travel and resort destination. First resort was founded in Pärnu in 1838. During the 20th century many architectural masterpieces were built in Pärnu - most notably Rannahotell and Mudaravila. After Estonia re-gained its independence Pärnu has held the title of Summer Capital of Estonia.
Pärnu has benefited greatly from its position on Via Baltica that links all the Baltic States. Along Via Baltica it's easy to reach Estonian capital Tallinn (130km) and Latvian capital Riga (185km). Estonian student capital Tartu (174km) is also only few hour's drive away.
From Scandinavia tourists can come to Tallinn and Estonia by ferries using Viking Line, Tallink or Eckerö Line for example.
From Tallinn and Riga it is best to use long distance bus system to reach Pärnu. Detailed information about long distance bus services to Pärnu can be found here. Pärnu is also well connected to other main Estonian cities. Edelaraudtee train service can also be used to reach Pärnu from Tallinn.
